How many grams of protein, carbohydrate and fat should an adult consume per day?

The protein RDA for generally healthy adults is 0.8 g per kilogram of body weight per day. Adult AMDRs allocate 10–35% of energy to protein, 45–65% to carbohydrate and 20–35% to fat. This tool converts those percentages with 4 kcal/g for protein and carbohydrate and 9 kcal/g for fat.

How the calculation works

Weight accepts one decimal from 30–300 kg and energy accepts a whole 800–6,000 kcal/day. Protein RDA = weight × 0.8. Each gram boundary = energy × lower or upper percentage ÷ kcal per gram. Calculation uses integer tenths of a gram and rounds half up only at the end. The RDA is intended to be sufficient for nearly all healthy people in the life-stage group; it is not a universal minimum or optimum. AMDR is an energy-distribution framework and does not assess food quality.

Frequently asked questions

Is 0.8 g/kg a protein minimum or the optimum for everyone?

Neither is the RDA definition. It is a reference intended to be sufficient for nearly all healthy people in its life-stage group. Individual needs and sport, weight-loss or treatment goals can differ.

Why does the protein RDA differ from the AMDR lower boundary?

They answer different questions. RDA is expressed per kilogram of body weight, while AMDR is a percentage of total energy, so different weights and energy values need not produce matching numbers.

Will adding every upper gram boundary equal the entered energy?

No. Do not combine every upper boundary. The ranges are constraints within which a chosen distribution should total about 100% of energy; this calculator does not automatically create one meal pattern.

Can I use this for kidney disease, pregnancy, breastfeeding or an eating disorder?

No. Those situations, as well as liver disease, malnutrition and clinical nutrition care, require individualized assessment by a qualified clinician or dietitian.
