How are GPA and cumulative GPAX calculated?
A GPA is total course quality points—credits multiplied by grade points—divided by the credits included in the calculation. A cumulative GPA or GPAX combines quality points and credits from prior terms with the current term. This tool uses the legacy A = 4.00 through F = 0.00 scale.
How to use this tool
- Review or edit the example courses, and add up to 30 course rows.
- Select the credits and A, B+, B, C+, C, D+, D, or F grade for every course that your institution includes in GPA.

How the calculation works
Each course uses quality points = credits × grade points, and term GPA = term quality points ÷ term credits. With prior data, estimated prior quality points equal prior credits × prior GPAX, and new GPAX = (prior quality points + term quality points) ÷ (prior credits + term credits). Internal fixed-scale integers and BigInt are used before rounding half up to 4 decimals, but an official record may truncate or apply different policies.

Limitations
- The grade scale is fixed to the legacy page: A 4.00, B+ 3.50, B 3.00, C+ 2.50, C 2.00, D+ 1.50, D 1.00, and F 0.00. It does not support minus grades or institution-specific scales.
- Every entered course is treated as GPA-bearing. P, S, U, W, I, non-GPA courses, repeat policies, grade forgiveness, and transfer-credit rules are not modeled.
- Prior quality points are estimated by multiplying typed prior GPAX by prior credits. If that GPAX was already rounded or truncated, the new cumulative value is approximate.
- Results display 4 decimals rounded half up, while institutions may truncate or display a different precision. This is not an official academic record.
- The tool supports up to 30 courses, 0.5–8.0 credits per course, and up to 9,999.99 prior credits.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between GPA and GPAX?
GPA on this page uses only the current course rows. GPAX combines prior credits and quality points with the current rows. If no prior data is entered, GPAX equals GPA.
Why might this GPAX differ from my institution's system?
An institution may use different grade points, truncate rather than round, exclude some courses, or apply rules for repeats, transfers, P/W/I marks, and forgiveness. A typed prior GPAX may also already be shortened. Treat the official transcript as authoritative.
Should I include a course graded F?
Under this scale, F has 0 grade points while its credits remain in the denominator, lowering GPA. Check your institution's rules, especially for repeated or withdrawn courses.
Does the website store my courses and grades?
No. Calculation, copying, and file generation run in your browser without sending academic information to the server.
