Quick answer

How much must I save each month to reach a goal?

First calculate the future value of current savings. Divide the remaining target by the future-value factor for end-of-month contributions. At a zero return, the monthly amount is simply the shortfall divided by the number of months.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter the target and savings already available.
  2. Set the years to the goal and assumed annual return.
  3. Review the monthly requirement and test a zero-return or conservative scenario.

How the calculation works

The effective annual return is converted to a monthly rate. Existing savings grow for every period, while new savings use the future value of an ordinary annuity because deposits occur at month end. If existing savings reach the target, required new saving is zero.

Examples

Example Input Expected result
One-year goal with no return
Target THB 120,000, no current savings, 1 year, 0% return
Save THB 10,000 at each month end
Target already funded
Target THB 100,000, current THB 100,000, 1 year, 0%
Required monthly saving THB 0

Limitations

  • Assumes equal end-of-month saving and a constant return.
  • Taxes, fees, missed deposits, and changing goals are excluded.
  • The tool does not recommend products or guarantee the target.

Frequently asked questions

Are savings made at the start or end of the month?

At month end. Start-of-month saving would have slightly longer to earn a return.

Should inflation be included in the target?

For a future expense, first adjust today's target with the inflation calculator, then enter that future amount here.

Is the expected return constant?

It is constant in the formula, but actual returns can vary or be negative, so also test 0% and conservative cases.
