Quick answer

How much purchasing power does inflation remove?

If prices rise with inflation, future cost equals today's amount multiplied by (1+inflation)^years. The purchasing power of unchanged cash equals today's amount divided by the same factor.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter an amount stated in today's money.
  2. Set an annual inflation assumption and period.
  3. Read both the future equivalent cost and remaining purchasing power.

How the calculation works

The tool uses annual compounding: future cost = amount × (1+i)^t and purchasing power = amount ÷ (1+i)^t. The rate and period come from the user. It neither retrieves historical CPI nor forecasts inflation.

Examples

Example Input Expected result
Ten-percent inflation for one year
THB 100,000, 10%, 1 year
Equivalent goods cost THB 110,000 and THB 100,000 has purchasing power of about THB 90,909.09
No inflation
THB 50,000, 0%, 10 years
Future cost and purchasing power remain THB 50,000 under the assumption

Limitations

  • Uses constant assumed inflation, not historical CPI.
  • Does not represent personal baskets, regions, or specific product categories.
  • It is not an economic forecast or investment advice.

Frequently asked questions

Is the entered rate actual CPI?

No. It is a constant assumption; the tool does not retrieve monthly CPI or calculate historical inflation.

Why are price increase and purchasing-power loss different?

They use different bases: future price multiplies by the inflation factor, while purchasing power divides by it.

Does this apply to every expense?

It is a broad estimate. Housing, education, healthcare, or a personal basket can change differently from headline inflation.
