Annualized returns
Quick answer
What is the difference between CAGR and XIRR?
CAGR connects one beginning value to one ending value. XIRR uses the date of every cash flow, making it more suitable when money is added, withdrawn, or received during the holding period.
How to use this tool
- Enter beginning value, ending value, and years for CAGR.
- Enter one XIRR cash flow per line as YYYY-MM-DD, amount.
- Use negative investments and positive receipts, then interpret the annualized results in context.
How the calculation works
CAGR = (ending ÷ beginning)^(1/years) − 1. XIRR finds r where the sum of cash flow ÷ (1+r)^(days from first date/365) equals zero, using bisection. Enter investments as negative and receipts as positive. Multiple sign changes can produce no unique result.
Examples
| Example | Input | Expected result |
|---|---|---|
| Ten-percent CAGR | |
CAGR 10% a year |
| One-year XIRR | |
XIRR 10% a year |
Limitations
- CAGR omits volatility, risk, and drawdowns.
- XIRR can have multiple results or no result for some cash-flow patterns.
- The tool does not verify transactions or include tax, fees, or benchmark comparison.
Frequently asked questions
Is CAGR the actual return in every year?
No. It is a smoothed rate connecting endpoints and hides interim volatility.
Why are investments negative in XIRR?
They are cash leaving the investor. Proceeds or ending value are positive cash entering.
Why can XIRR fail?
It requires positive and negative cash flows, and some patterns have no bracketed root or have more than one mathematical result.
